Emulating Greenland: New Tools for Understanding Ice-Sheet Change is a Climate Week event organized by the Laboratory on AI, Climate, and Society at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.

Climate models help scientists understand weather, ice sheets, and a changing climate, but they can take substantial computing power and time to run. This session explores how machine-learning emulators can learn from existing climate-model simulations and produce key results much more quickly.

Using the MAR regional climate model, the speakers will share work on Greenland’s surface meltwater and surface mass balance, measures that help scientists understand how snow and ice are changing, as well as snow-depth modeling in the European Alps. Together, the discussion will highlight both the exciting potential and the important challenges of using AI to make climate research faster and more accessible.

Speakers

  • Racheet Matai, Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Columbia University
  • Dr. Marco Tedesco, Lamont Research Professor and Founder and Director, Laboratory on AI, Climate and Society, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University

Come join us to learn more about how AI-powered climate emulators can help advance research on Greenland, ice-sheet change, and sea-level rise.
