Responsible AI for Earth and Climate Science
The Lamont AI Working Group brings together scientists, educators, practitioners, engineers, administrators, students, and researchers from across Lamont and Columbia University to integrate artificial intelligence into Earth and climate science in responsible and ethical ways. Our work spans machine learning for geophysical data, AI-assisted climate modeling, environmental sensing, climate justice, and the governance frameworks needed to deploy these tools responsibly. Whether you are a researcher looking to apply machine learning to your data, a student curious about AI in Earth science, or an institution interested in collaboration, this is the right place to start.
What We Do
We assess the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence for climate modeling, geophysical data, environmental sensing, and Earth system research.
AI, Climate and Society
We examine how AI intersects with our society and climate via , for example, focusing on topics such as climate justice, feminism, equity, ethics, and communities most affected by environmental and algorithmic harm.
Responsible AI Practice
We support and work on developing approaches for transparent, auditable, and ethically governed AI systems that can be trusted in Earth and climate science.
Featured Initiative
Laboratory of AI, Climate and Society
The Laboratory on AI, Climate and Society at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is an interdisciplinary research group advancing the responsible use of artificial intelligence in climate science and social life. The lab builds machine learning methods, databases, data tools, and governance frameworks that are scientifically rigorous, openly documented, and designed for equitable outcomes.
